UP AND OUT OF POVERTY

The Up and Out of Poverty Campaign, is a new campaign, which focuses on another root of homelessness, lack of worker’s rights. Anyone who doesn’t earn a living wage, or know how to exercise their worker’s rights is at severe risk of becoming homeless.  The majority of homeless people are workers, but minimum wage workers would have to work 79 hours to afford a market rate studio apartment in Nashville.  Many NHPP members work through temporary agencies, and often receive far less than minimum wage by additionally being charged for transportation, safety equipment, and check cashing.

In 2007 NHPP partnered with Mid TN Jobs with Justice, The Urban Epicenter, and the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition when we, collectively realized that the poorest workers in Nashville desperately needed to have a voice in the decisions that affect their lives.

The Nashville Movement was born and today is a growing coalition, of workers, community organizations, students, and congregations, committed to ending poverty, and winning respect, with and for the poorest workers in Nashville.

The Nashville Movement is currently laying the ground work for a broad based worker rights movement that can win lasting improvements for the poorest workers
