THE ROAD HOME CAMPAIGN

The Road Home Campaign is focused on addressing the primary cause of homelessness, that is, the lack of affordable housing for the lowest income individuals and families. The goal of this campaign is the creation of thousands of new housing units for homeless and low-income people between 2007 and 2015. The campaign’s focus is on decision makers at the local, state and federal levels, and their efforts to re-prioritize housing in Nashville.
  • As of June 30th, 2007 the city now has a clear benchmark of developing 200 units of housing for homeless people every year for the next 9 years.
  • The NHPP asked for $2.3 Million for 200 units of housing for the 2007-2008 City Budget and $800,000 was approved for approximately 60 units.
  • Part of a large coalition to establish the Barnes Fund, a broad-based fund to increase the base of truly affordable housing in Nashville.
GET OUT THE VOTE CAMPAIGN & HOUSING
    • The 6 candidates for Mayor (one of whom will be elected on August 2nd, 2007) all committed to the 200 unit benchmark and 4 of the 6 committed to achieving the benchmark on May 30th, 2007.
    • On June 19th, 2007 four of the 6 candidates spent the night on the streets, the first time this has occurred in recorded US history.
    • The new Mayor, Karl Dean was one of the candidates that participated in the Urban Plunge and he committed to the 200 Units per year and did so publicly.
    • Registered over 1,000 homeless people to vote and got over 100 to the polls.
      PUBLIC AWARENESS AND PUBLIC EDUCATION
      • Associated Press covered the Mayoral Urban Plunge and was printed in dozens of papers around the world.
      • Big Noise Films from New York City created a documentary on the Nashville Homeless Power Project this summer.
      • Left Turn Magazine published an article on the NHPP WITHOUT HOUSING action.
